Country at a glance
Finland is a northern europe member of the European Union, with its capital in Helsinki. The country joined the European Communities in 1995 in the EFTA-route enlargement (alongside Austria, Finland and Sweden). Economically, Finland is a Nordic economy with strong forestry, technology (Nokia legacy) and electricity grids; the only Nordic state in the eurozone. The country has used the euro since 1999, and it is part of the Schengen area for cross-border movement. The official languages are Finnish, Swedish. On Eurostat's headline indicators, Finland is currently 17th-most populous of the 27 member states with data on record.
