Malta is a mediterranean island member of the European Union, with its capital in Valletta and Birkirkara as its largest urban area. The country joined the European Communities in 2004 in the largest single enlargement to date — the ten central-and-eastern European, Mediterranean accession. Economically, Malta is the EU's smallest member state by population, specialised in financial services, online gaming and tourism, with English as a co-official language. The country has used the euro since 2008, and it is part of the Schengen area for cross-border movement. The official languages are Maltese, English. On Eurostat's headline indicators, Malta is currently 27th-most populous of the 27 member states with data on record.
