DIRECT DIabetes REsearCh on patient sTratification

Coordinator: SANOFI-AVENTIS DEUTSCHLAND GMBH (DE)

The overarching aims of the DIRECT consortium, consisting of 20 leading academic groups in diabetes and 5 EFPIA companies, are to identify biomarkers that address current bottlenecks in diabetes drug development and to develop a stratified medicines approach to treatment of type 2 diabetes with either existing or novel therapies. There is heterogeneity in who develops diabetes, the rate at which their subsequent diabetes progresses, how they respond to diabetes therapy and who develops micro- and macrovascular complications. In the DIRECT consortium we propose to identify biomarkers to identif…

About Seventh Framework Programme (2007–2013)

The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) ran from 2007 to 2013 and was the EU's main research-funding instrument of that period. It mobilised roughly €50 billion across cooperation projects, ERC frontier grants, Marie Curie fellowships, capacity-building actions and Euratom research. FP7 closed to new calls in 2013 but its projects continued for years after under their original grant agreements.

Co-funding: the European Union contributes €21.4M toward a total project budget of €46.5M — a funding rate of 46%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 7.5 years from 2012-02-01 to 2019-07-31.
