PROMARK Genetic prostate cancer variants as biomarkers of disease progression

Coordinator: ISLENSK ERFDAGREINING EHF (IS)

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in males in Europe, causing over 87,000 deaths in 2006. Early diagnosis and treatment are key factors in determining survival but screening methods based on the commonly-used PSA blood test have low specificity and result in excessive treatment of localized lesions that might never progress to symptomatic cancer. Biomarkers that help determine which of the early stage tumors will remain confined to the prostate and which will progress to an invasive, aggressive form of the disease are urgently needed. Using genome-wide association analysis, we identif…

About Seventh Framework Programme (2007–2013)

The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) ran from 2007 to 2013 and was the EU's main research-funding instrument of that period. It mobilised roughly €50 billion across cooperation projects, ERC frontier grants, Marie Curie fellowships, capacity-building actions and Euratom research. FP7 closed to new calls in 2013 but its projects continued for years after under their original grant agreements.

Co-funding: the European Union contributes €2.7M toward a total project budget of €4.0M — a funding rate of 67%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 5 years from 2008-01-01 to 2012-12-31.
