BRAINPROTECT Presenilin 2 - a protector against Alzheimer's disease

Coordinator: RUDER BOSKOVIC INSTITUTE (HR)

Accumulation of neurotoxic amyloid beta peptides (Ab) in the brain is considered to be the central event in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Ab is released from the beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) during specialised processing events. This proposal aims to examine presenilin 2 (PS2) protein-mediated molecular and cellular events that are protective against Ab accumulation and AD and, as such, is aligned with the objective of the FP7’s Health Research Programme that focuses on “Research on the brain and related diseases”. We propose that cerebellum, an area of the human brain…

About Seventh Framework Programme (2007–2013)

The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) ran from 2007 to 2013 and was the EU's main research-funding instrument of that period. It mobilised roughly €50 billion across cooperation projects, ERC frontier grants, Marie Curie fellowships, capacity-building actions and Euratom research. FP7 closed to new calls in 2013 but its projects continued for years after under their original grant agreements.

EU contribution: €192k awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 2 years from 2014-10-01 to 2016-09-30.
