Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are common neurodegenerative conditions, posing a major societal burden. There is a lack of treatments to slow disease progression, and therapeutic development has been impeded by a lack of biomarkers that can detect individuals early in the disease, measure treatment effects, and stratify patients.European cohorts recruited for research on aging and neurodegeneration provide a huge potential for biomarker discovery and validation by providing bio-samples along with deep clinical and imaging phenotypes. About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)
Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.
