The European Green Deal sets ambitious targets to GHG emission reductions for the process industry, that can only partly be reached by the transition to renewable energy. Residual, hard-to-abate CO2 emissions from industrial processes such as steel and cement production will need to be captured, and wherever possible, processed and recycled into new products. The shift towards low carbon processes may disrupt existing industrial symbiosis pathways. If no alternative linkages are developed, this may lead to increasing emissions in downstream sectors. About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)
Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.
Co-funding: the European Union contributes €14.8M toward a total project budget of €20.3M — a funding rate of 73%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 4.5 years from 2023-01-01 to 2027-06-30.
