ResistSOS Overcoming Resistance to Anti-cancer Drugs by Blocking Mutation-prone DNA Polymerases and the SOS Response
Coordinator: WEIZMANN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE (IL)
Background: A large fraction of cancer patients die because their tumors initially respond to drugs but later they evolve tolerance. Thus, resistance to diverse drugs, along with the soaring costs of new treatments, are emerging as major societal issues of the 2020s. Herein, we explore one of the most distressful examples, tolerance of lung cancer to EGFR-specific tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Working hypothesis: In similarity to bacteria exposed to antibiotics, when cancer cells are exposed to TKIs they enlist SOS responses, which activate endogenous mutators. Hence, we will combine the…
About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)
Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.
EU contribution: €2.5M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 5 years from 2023-10-01 to 2028-09-30.
