MARVIC Developing and testing a framework for the design of harmonized, context-specific Monitoring, Reporting and Verification systems for soil Carbon and greenhouse gas balances by Agricultural activities

Coordinator: EIGEN VERMOGEN VAN HET INSTITUUT VOOR LANDBOUW- EN VISSERIJONDERZOEK (BE)

The EC has set the ambition to become climate neutral by 2050. As not all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be avoided, such as GHGs from biological processes in agriculture, carbon removal will become increasingly important to meet the neutrality targets set. Besides carbon capture and storage by industry, carbon sequestration in the land use sector will need to compensate for the remaining emissions. In this respect, reliable yet cost-effective systems to monitor, report and verify efforts by land managers become increasingly important. This is particularly relevant for the international G…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

EU contribution: €7.0M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 4 years from 2023-06-01 to 2027-05-31.
