TalkingPhages Decoding communication between mobile genetic elements

Coordinator: TEL AVIV UNIVERSITY (IL)

Communication between organisms is one of the most sophisticated forms of social interactions. It has been recently discovered that bacterial viruses (phages) show multiple social attributes including the ability to communicate extracellularly with their progenies through a peptide-based system called arbitrium. This system is utilized by phages to guide life-cycle decisions, such as the transitions between their quiescence and virulence states. It has subsequently become clear that this system is not exclusive to phages but is also present in other mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and that its…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

EU contribution: €8.5M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 6 years from 2024-03-01 to 2030-02-28.
