GRAIL Time-resolved imaging of membrane transporter dynamics under physiological ionic gradients

Coordinator: UNIVERSITY OF HAMBURG (DE)

Without biological membranes, there would be no life as we know it. Lipid bilayers shield cellular content from the environment, creating defined micro environments with specific functionality. Transport of molecules and information across these membranes is carried out by integral membrane protein channels, receptors, pumps and transporters. Living cells maintain chemical gradients and electrical potential differences across their membranes, the potential energy of which can be accessed by the membrane proteins to perform useful work. Indeed, central processes such as metabolic energy genera…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

EU contribution: €11.2M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 6 years from 2024-05-01 to 2030-04-30.
