GENESYS Next-generation engineering of gas-fermenting cell factories through large-scale systems-level maps

Coordinator: TARTU ULIKOOL (EE)

Gas fermentation provides a unique opportunity for the circular bioeconomy by enabling carbon recycling from gaseous waste feedstocks into value-added bioproducts using microbes. Acetogens are ideal biocatalysts for gas fermentation as they use gas (CO and/or CO2+H2) as their sole carbon and energy source, evidenced by the commercialisation of the waste gas-to-ethanol conversion process. Despite recent efforts, our understanding of genotype-phenotype relationships in acetogens is still minimal. This, however, is required for rational metabolic engineering and expanding the product spectrum of…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

EU contribution: €2.3M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 5 years from 2024-07-01 to 2029-06-30.
