DendAssembly Dendrite assemblies as the core cortical computation module for continual motor learning

Coordinator: TECHNION - ISRAEL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (IL)

The cortex has the amazing capacity to continuously learn through experience while retaining past memories. But how does the cortical network implement this continual learning while avoiding interference and catastrophic overwriting of prior events? While cell assemblies with simple point neurons are thought to serve as the basic learning and storage units, this model poses major challenges in dynamic environments and lacks experimental support. Relying on strong preliminary results, I here propose a radically different view of learning and storage in the cortex—the dendrite assembly hypothes…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

EU contribution: €2.5M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 5 years from 2024-11-01 to 2029-10-31.
