MATRIX-MeV Matrix-Enhanced Ionization for Nanoscale Chemical Mapping with MeV Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry

Coordinator: RUDER BOSKOVIC INSTITUTE (HR)

The capabilities of chemical composition nanoscale mapping are of utmost importance for the advance of microelectronics, power storage, cellular biology, 2D and quantum materials, sensors, photovoltaics, etc. Molecular distribution can be precisely analyzed with secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). MeV-SIMS is a version of this technique capable of detecting high-mass molecules exceeding 1 kDa with primary ions of MeV energies used for molecular desorption. Regardless of the type of SIMS, there are limitations, with the most important ones being low ionization yields between 0.1% and 10% a…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

The project runs over approximately 2 years from 2026-09-01 to 2028-08-31.
