SPLENDOR SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION OF LIGNIN-DERIVED END-PRODUCTS VIA DEPOLYMERISATION REACTIONS

Coordinator: UNIVERSITEIT GENT (BE)

SPLENDOR aims to demonstrate a groundbreaking one-step depolymerization technology that efficiently converts lignin from black liquor, a pulping industry byproduct, into valuable aromatic chemicals, without the need for pre-treatment, additional chemicals, or catalysts. This process integrates seamlessly into pulp mills, enhancing scalability and cost-efficiency. It achieves complete conversion of lignin into bio-aromatic monomers, dimers, and oligomers, while recycling inorganic chemicals back to the mill in a zero-waste approach.SPLENDOR will optimize the conversion of black liquor into hig…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

Co-funding: the European Union contributes €7.3M toward a total project budget of €9.2M — a funding rate of 80%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 3 years from 2025-09-01 to 2028-08-31.
