HARVEST Hydrothermal iron from the earth’s interior as fertiliser of photosynthesis in the ocean

Coordinator: CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE CNRS (FR)

HARVEST investigates how iron released from submarine volcanoes stimulates the growth of phytoplankton, especially in nutrient-poor ocean regions. Iron is known to be a limiting nutrient for photosynthesizing plankton, but research has mostly focused on iron delivery via atmospheric dust. The contribution of iron from hydrothermal sources – leached out of hot rock along the volcanically active plate boundaries – has been largely overlooked. This process, however, may drive a significant component of primary production in iron-limited ocean areas.HARVEST addresses this critical knowledge gap t…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

EU contribution: €13.6M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 6 years from 2026-05-01 to 2032-04-30.
