PROPEL Protein Rigid Organization for Powered Engineered Locomotion

Coordinator: KEMIJSKI INSTITUT (SI)

Proteins are nature's nano-machines, driving essential biological processes, including those involving mechanical work: DNA replication, membrane remodelling, and cargo transport. Synthetic protein motors have enormous potential in health and material applications and could help us unravel the mechanism of natural protein motors. At present, the ability to design protein motors from scratch remains beyond our reach. The PROPEL project aims to address this challenge by constructing the first genetically encodable de novo protein walkers capable of powered, directional motion along designed pro…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

EU contribution: €2.0M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 5 years from 2026-08-01 to 2031-07-31.
