LIGAND-AI Protein-ligand data generation at scale to support computational hit finding and optimization

Coordinator: STRUCTURAL GENOMICS CONSORTIUM LBG (UK)

The ability to discover and optimize small-molecule ligands by using innovative physics-based, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches would transform and democratize the discovery of new small molecule drugs and related research tools (chemical probes), with important implications for the development of new medicines for rare and pediatric diseases, cancer, and women’s health. The development of these methods is being held back by the lack of high-quality protein-ligand data in the public domain. To fill this gap, we have assembled a multi-sector public-private part…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

EU contribution: €29.9M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 5 years from 2025-11-01 to 2030-10-31.
