STRAINGUT Impact of strain-level functional diversity in mucin-degrading bacteria on the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease

Coordinator: LUXEMBOURG INSTITUTE OF HEALTH (LU)

Recent advances in microbiome research have revealed numerous associations between gut bacteria and host health. However, these correlations do not establish causality and provide limited insight into the mechanisms by which specific bacteria influence disease. There is therefore a critical need to uncover underlying bacterial functions through targeted studies. This project focuses on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a condition marked by chronic intestinal inflammation and disruption of the colonic mucus barrier. Among bacteria linked to IBD are mucin-degraders, which can feed on component…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

0 EU contribution: €200k awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 2 years from 2026-10-01 to 2028-09-30.
