U-BIOPRED Unbiased Biomarkers for the Prediction of Respiratory Disease Outcomes

Coordinator: NOVARTIS PHARMA AG (CH)

RationaleThe inability of pre-clinical studies to predict clinical efficacy is a major bottleneck in drug development. In severe asthma this bottleneck results from: a lack of useful and validated biomarkers, underperforming pre-clinical models, inadequate and incomplete sub-phenotyping, and insufficient disease understanding.HypothesisThe use of biomarker profiles comprised of various types of high-dimensional data, integrated with an innovative systems biology approach into distinct phenotype handprints, will enable significantly better prediction of therapeutic efficacy than single or even…

About Seventh Framework Programme (2007–2013)

The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) ran from 2007 to 2013 and was the EU's main research-funding instrument of that period. It mobilised roughly €50 billion across cooperation projects, ERC frontier grants, Marie Curie fellowships, capacity-building actions and Euratom research. FP7 closed to new calls in 2013 but its projects continued for years after under their original grant agreements.

Co-funding: the European Union contributes €9.9M toward a total project budget of €26.9M — a funding rate of 37%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 6 years from 2009-10-01 to 2015-09-30.
