Despite remarkable progress in the management of cardiovascular disease (CVD), major unmet needs remain with regard to mortality, hospitalisations, quality of life (QoL), healthcare expenditures and productivity. Acute coronary syndrome (ACS), atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) are major and growing components of the global CVD burden. Optimal management of these conditions is complicated by their complex aetiology and heterogeneous prognoses. About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)
Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.
