OpenLOOP OpenLOOP recycling technology - sustainable and profitable solution to the management of PET/cellulose waste

Coordinator: IOS, INSTITUT ZA OKOLJEVARSTVO IN SENZORJE, PROIZVODNJA, TRGOVINA IN STORITVE DOO (SI)

OpenLOOP is delivering a novel chemical recycling technology that:-Can be used to degrade any mixture and blend of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic and CELLULOSE waste.-As a final output yields high-value feedstock: 5-HMF (5-hydroxymethylfurfural), LA (Levulinic acid) H2 (hydrogen) and rTA (recycled Terephthalic Acid).-Is clean and can be successfully implemented in industrial environment. The OpenLOOP technology consists of several IOSs proprietary processing steps involving chemical procedures: enzymatic hydrolysis to separate PET and CELLULOSE, neutral hydrolysis to depolymerise PET…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

Co-funding: the European Union contributes €2.5M toward a total project budget of €3.5M — a funding rate of 70%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 2.5 years from 2023-04-01 to 2025-09-30.
