In the last 25 years the total amount of marine trade has nearly doubled. In the same period the container trade has undergone a tenfold increase, making the container fleet the fastest growing fleet at present. With 80% of total EU trade being transported by sea, the maritime transport is of the greatest importance to the EU. The increasing demand in container transportation is met by use of more containerships. About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)
Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.
