Diabetes affects 8.5% (2013) of the adult European population rising to 10.3% (2035) and is associated with co-morbid conditions such as cardiovascular and renal abnormalities. These lead to diabetic complications, ischemic heart disease, heart failure and kidney failure. Management of this growing epidemic requires a shift in care management and delivery, away from lab testing. About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)
Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.
