BrightnESS Building a research infrastructure and synergies for highest scientific impact on ESS

Coordinator: EUROPEAN SPALLATION SOURCE ERIC (SE)

The science of materials has always been at the centre of scientific and technological progress in human development. The tools to understand materials that fashion them to meet our societal needs have been just as important. Thermal neutrons are one of the most powerful probes that look directly at the structure and dynamics of materials from the macro- to the microscopic scale and from nano-seconds to seconds. It is therefore natural that a group of 17 European Partner Countries have joined together to construct the world’s most powerful neutron source, the European Spallation Source (ESS).…

About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)

Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.

EU contribution: €19.9M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 3 years from 2015-09-01 to 2018-08-31.
