PROBLEM: 1.1 billion people, most of whom live in developing regions of Asia and Africa, lack access to electricity. Theprimary light source for them are kerosene lamps, which are not only costly, but also has negative impact on human health,resulting in illness and even mortalities. Existing solar-powered products are too expensive for households with a $20monthly income. About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)
Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.
