Innovative SMEs are most likely to create new markets, achieve rapid growth, and help the economy recover. Externalfinance may be particularly important for innovative SMEs, as they usually lack the internal resources to successfullycommercialise innovations. About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)
Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.
