Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the leading causes of global disability, especially among the Elderly populations – approximately 10–12% of the adult population in the world has symptomatic OA. Specifically, it affects more than 40 million people in Europe. Currently there is no cure for OA – there are no current therapies available that can reverse or halt the progression of osteoarthritis. Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation.
