EMME-CARE Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East – Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre

Coordinator: THE CYPRUS INSTITUTE (CY)

The Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME), a region with a population of about 400 million, is affected by dust storms, dryness, heat extremes, and unparalleled air pollution. The region has been identified as a climate change “hot spot”, with adverse impacts ranging from extreme weather events to poor air quality, expected to further exacerbate in the coming decades. To address these challenges, EMME-CARE proposes the establishment of a world-class research and innovation Centre focused on environmental challenges, via the upgrade of an existing regional Centre of excellence, the Atmo…

About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)

Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.

EU contribution: €400k awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 1 year from 2017-09-01 to 2018-08-31.
