Buildings are responsible for 40% of the energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions in the EU. According to Directive2010/31/EU, all new buildings in the EU should be nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEB) by the end of 2020. The amount ofthe solar energy that is not collected from the facades contributes to CO¬2 emissions and the use of fossil fuel that couldotherwise be avoided. About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)
Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.
