ThermoQuantumImage Thermal imaging of nano and atomic-scale dissipation in quantum states of matter

Coordinator: WEIZMANN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE (IL)

Energy dissipation is a fundamental process governing the dynamics of physical, chemical and biological systems and is of major importance in condensed matter physics where scattering, loss of quantum information, and even breakdown of topological protection are deeply linked to intricate details of how and where the dissipation occurs. But despite its vital importance, dissipation is currently not a readily measurable microscopic quantity. The aim of this proposal is to launch a new discipline of nanoscale dissipation imaging and spectroscopy and to apply it to study of quantum systems and n…

About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)

Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.

EU contribution: €3.1M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 5 years from 2018-06-01 to 2023-05-31.
