4-D nanoSCOPE Advancing osteoporosis medicine by observing bone microstructure and remodelling using a four-dimensional nanoscope

Coordinator: UNIVERSITATSKLINIKUM ERLANGEN (DE)

Due to Europe's ageing society, there has been a dramatic increase in the occurrence of osteoporosis (OP) and related diseases. Sufferers have an impaired quality of life, and there is a considerable cost to society associated with the consequent loss of productivity and injuries. The current understanding of this disease needs to be revolutionized, but study has been hampered by a lack of means to properly characterize bone structure, remodeling dynamics and vascular activity. This project, 4D nanoSCOPE, will develop tools and techniques to permit time-resolved imaging and characterization o…

About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)

Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.

EU contribution: €12.4M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 6.8 years from 2019-04-01 to 2025-12-31.
