SEASCANN Integrative vision and real-time communication system for onboard sorting of fish species

Coordinator: SKAGINN HF (IS)

Fishing fleets must handle great amounts of fish as fast as possible to prevent deterioration of quality, assess catch’s worth, prepare next processing and marketing steps, and report catch to the authorities. Today, this labour-intensive, time-consuming and subjective process is conducted by fishermen. By speeding up the onboard grading process and unleashing the potential of real-time data, SEASCANN is a game-changer for the fish value chain: fully automatic, it provides a high throughput (1 fish per second), saves 35% labour costs, and yields a high-quality product avoiding almost 100% of …

About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)

Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.

Co-funding: the European Union contributes €2.1M toward a total project budget of €3.0M — a funding rate of 70%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 2 years from 2018-09-01 to 2020-08-31.
