SMART TRAWLING Next-generation control system to enhance performance of commercial fishing trawlers

Coordinator: NAUST MARINE EHF (IS)

Trawl fishing is one of the most common commercial fishing techniques in the world. Large nets are towed behind a boat and catch massive amounts of fish before being pulled onto the vessel. However, this technique has major drawbacks for those companies using it: as the movement of the nets is extremely difficult to control, captains are required to drastically change the vessels movement and continuously adjust winch control knobs to accommodate the nets position. Thus, they cannot focus efforts on guiding ships, and as a result, there is a waste of fuel in unnecessary, inefficient manoeuvre…

About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)

Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.

Co-funding: the European Union contributes €50k toward a total project budget of €71k — a funding rate of 70%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 0.3 years from 2018-08-01 to 2018-11-30.
