In the digital world, exabytes of data are collected by manufacturing, energy, telecom companies. The amount of datagenerated in the past 8 years grew fifteen-fold while datacenters processing power increased only fourfold. According topredictions of IBM, the number of devices that are connected to the internet will increase 7 times in 3 years and will reach upto 50B in 2020. This reality will increase the gap between datacenters processing power and generated data. About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)
Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.
