Starborne Novel map-population and rendering techniques for reinventing massively multiplayer online computer games

Coordinator: SOLID CLOUDS EHF (IS)

Computer games are experiencing an incredible evolution. With 2.2B gamers across the globe (25% of the EU online population playing video games), this industry has a constant demand for new creative approaches, essential to maintain players' loyalty in a very demanding market. In MMORTS games (Massively Multiplayer Online Real-time Strategy), spatial representation in hex-maps has a huge impact on how engaging a game is. But current approaches for hex-map population/rendering are suboptimal when applied to the latest tendencies in MMORTS, which assume thousands of simultaneous online players …

About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)

Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.

Co-funding: the European Union contributes €50k toward a total project budget of €71k — a funding rate of 70%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 0.3 years from 2019-05-01 to 2019-08-31.
