Although manufacturing is moving towards digitalization and full automation, some industries, such as the furniture industry, are still heavily reliant on inefficient and outdated technologies. In particular, the furniture sector has been identified to lack any sort of automated solution for wood curing quality control, one of the critical manufacturing processes. Apart from causing a high defect rate, the absence of an inspection system creates a risk of manufacturing hundreds of thousands of pieces of furniture that are not adequately cured and potentially poisonous. About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)
Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.
