JOINTPROMISE PRECISION MANUFACTURING OF MICROENGINEERED COMPLEX JOINT IMPLANTS

Coordinator: KATHOLIEKE UNIVERSITEIT LEUVEN (BE)

There is convincing evidence, in animal models and in humans, that deep osteochondral defects of the joint surface lead to a high rate of osteoarthritis (OA) over time. The disease process in OA, the most prevalent arthritic disease affecting 25% of the adult population, involves the entire joint affecting both the articular cartilage and the underlying bone. Hence it is crucial to consider the entire osteochondral unit as a target for repair. Tissue engineered implants could provide a solution for the regeneration of this type of defects and prevent the development of OA. This project aims t…

About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)

Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.

EU contribution: €7.9M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 5.5 years from 2020-01-01 to 2025-06-30.
