The cross-border watercourses, Dommel and Warmbeek/Tongelreep pose a major challenge in terms of water quality. One big stumbling block is the current management of the wastewater chains: during rainy periods, contaminated water overflows from the sewage systems into watercourses and a classic wastewater purification plant does not always work optimally. Serious disruption of the oxygen content and ammonia intoxication in stream courses therefore has a considerable impact on fauna and flora. Thematic Objective 6 finances environment and resource efficiency — water and waste management, biodiversity protection, contaminated-site remediation, air quality, and the circular economy.
Co-funding: the EU contributes €3.0M toward a total project cost of €5.9M — a co-funding rate of 50%, with the remainder covered by national, regional or private sources.
