Demographic trends in Latvia indicate an ageing population and a shrinking population, especially in working age, resulting in a shrinking share of the working-age population. Since 2000, the total population of Latvia has decreased by more than a fifth. At the beginning of 2024, there were 1 871 882 independent residents in Latvia, 48% of whom are aged 45 and over. Labour shortages and the ageing of the existing workforce raise the question of how to achieve longer participation in the labour market by ensuring the maintenance of working capacity, productive and sustainable employment.
