START SUSTAINABLE ENERGY HARVESTING SYSTEMS BASED ON INNOVATIVE MINE WASTE RECYCLING

Coordinator: Laboratorio Nacional de Energia e Geologia I.P. (PT)

START project primary objective is to build an innovation ecosystem in the European Union (EU) based on the development of sustainable and economically viable thermoelectric (TE) waste heat harvesting systems to be applied in heavy industry and in maritime industry as well as primary power source for off-grid sensors and IoT devices. This objective will be achieved by incorporating abundant sulphides (mainly tetrahedrite mineral series), at present an environment hazard in mine tailings, collected in five European countries, in the production of advanced sulphide p-type TE thermoelements. About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

EU contribution: €7.7M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 4 years from 2022-06-01 to 2026-05-31.
