LASER4Mg Laser for Magnesium: the influence of laser wavelength, and feedstock quality on the optical properties of Mg alloy for industrial needs

Coordinator: LATVIJAS UNIVERSITATE (LV)

The overall aim of the project is to obtain the most optimum laser characteristics that will improve the ability to process Mg alloys for laser based additive manufacturing method, which currently suffers immensely due to excessive evaporation of the powder feedstock. Lasers are a form of monochromatic electromagnetic radiation, that interact with each metal differently. In selective laser melting (SLM) process, when laser energy is applied to the Mg powder, two primary processes occur: absorption and reflectance. The laser wavelength determines the degree of absorption in the metal powder. D…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

The project runs over approximately 2 years from 2024-04-15 to 2026-04-14.
