EBFZ Float zone silicon from electron beam grown rods

Coordinator: SIA KEPP EU (LV)

For the first time a technology for skull (cold crucible) growth of high purity silicon rods of high diameter, which can be used for float zone (FZ) single crystal growth, is developped. This technology enhances economical efficiency of FZ method compared to abandunt use of FZ rods obtained in Siemens process and for the first time enables FZ secondary silicon recycling inside FZ process. As a result, affordability of FZ single crystals enables their use in photovoltaics and for power rectifiers for either volatges over 2,5kV or in 1-2,5kV range where nowadays other types of silicon are used …

About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)

Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.

Co-funding: the European Union contributes €50k toward a total project budget of €71k — a funding rate of 70%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 0.5 years from 2016-10-01 to 2017-03-31.
