HyMethShip Hydrogen-Methanol Ship propulsion system using on-board pre-combustion carbon capture

The HyMethShip project reduces drastically emissions and improves the efficiency of waterborne transport at the same time. This system will be developed, validated, and demonstrated on shore with a typical engine for marine applications in the range of 2 MW (TRL 6). The HyMethShip system will achieve a reduction in CO2 of more than 97% and will practically eliminate SOx and PM emissions. NOx emissions will be reduced by more than 80%, significantly below the IMO Tier III limit. About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)
Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.
Co-funding: the European Union contributes €8.4M toward a total project budget of €9.3M — a funding rate of 91%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 3.5 years from 2018-07-01 to 2021-12-31.
