NGEAR 3D Next Generation Enhanced Augmented Reality 3D Glasses for medical education, pre-procedural planning, intra-procedural visualization, and patient rehabilitation

Coordinator: SIA LIGHTSPACE TECHNOLOGIES (LV)

Augmented reality (AR) is set to revolutionize the healthcare sector, especially for medical imaging technology for application in surgeries, radiologic diagnostics and medical practice. However, at the very state-of-the-art, the challenge is to derive a practical near-eye display for AR glasses. The current AR devices cause eye strain, fatigue and sickness due to the ‘vergence–accommodation (VA) conflict’ and are not suited for near-work (crucial for healthcare application) due to focal rivalry of stereoscopic 3D image and the real world. These adverse effects have constrained more rapid exp…

About Horizon 2020 (2014–2020)

Horizon 2020 was the EU's flagship research and innovation programme for 2014–2020, with a budget of around €77 billion. It bundled FP7's strands with the EIT and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, introduced a stronger societal-challenge orientation, and pushed the funding logic toward closer-to-market innovation. New calls closed in 2020 but funded projects continued through 2024.

Co-funding: the European Union contributes €2.3M toward a total project budget of €3.2M — a funding rate of 70%, with the remainder covered by the consortium partners. The project runs over approximately 2 years from 2020-07-01 to 2022-06-30.
