Oncological diseases are one of the most common causes of death worldwide, although most deaths can be prevented by early diagnosis. In the European Union and Lithuania, malignancies are the second most common cause of death after heart disease. In Lithuania, oncological diseases affect as many as 3 per cent of the population, that is, about 100,000 people, and about 17 000 new cases are diagnosed every year.
