SensingDEEP Deep-sea fish vision pushing limits of the vertebrate eye

Coordinator: UNIVERZITA KARLOVA (CZ)

Deep-sea fishes are known for extraordinary adaptations including enhanced sensory systems. They have eyes often modified in shape, anatomy or at the molecular level. Fascinatingly, some deep-sea fishes have evolved unique vision to potentially see colours. Here I propose to study functional evolution of this visual system, and to target the crucial question – can deep-sea fish see in colours? To perceive light, vertebrate retina has two types of photoreceptor cells, the rods for dim-light vision and cones for daylight colour vision. Many deep-sea fish lack cones, which makes them colour blin…

About Horizon Europe (2021–2027)

Horizon Europe is the EU's current research and innovation programme, covering 2021 to 2027 with a budget of roughly €95.5 billion. Its three pillars are Excellent Science (frontier research and mobility), Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (mission-driven collaborative projects in health, climate, digital, security and food) and Innovative Europe (the EIC and EIT). It also funds five EU Missions targeting cancer, climate adaptation, smart cities, oceans and soils.

EU contribution: €2.0M awarded to the consortium. The project runs over approximately 5 years from 2024-07-01 to 2029-06-30.
